"Major Depression, Bipolar Disorders and HIV"
People psychiatric disorders are disproportionately infected with HIV. Besides substance abuse and dependence contributing to HIV risk, other problems such as Bipolar Disorder, Depression and PTSD contribute to risk taking behaviors. After infection with HIV, these disorders contribute to poor adherence and mortality. People with depression die of HIV sooner than those who are not infected. In my talk, I will focus on two disorders, Major Depression and PTSD. At the end of my presentation, those present should be able to:

  • Identify signs and symptoms of depressions and the significance as a predictor of mortality in HIV infected individuals.

  • Discuss post-traumatic stress disorder and its impact on medical adherence as it relates to HIV-positive individuals.
